The Tamil Nadu government, led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, is considering the establishment of a large-scale AI city. The proposed project is expected to be a self-contained campus spanning 1,000 acres, featuring office spaces, research facilities, global capability centers, and residential amenities to foster a comprehensive ecosystem.
State AI Minister R. Kumar stated that the government has shortlisted land parcels near Chennai for the initiative, which aims to enhance the state's global competitiveness in artificial intelligence. The project is currently under budget deliberation, with officials studying similar models in other states and exploring potential subsidies for AI compute access for startups and developers.
This initiative is separate from the AI park previously announced by the DMK government in January. While the current administration is reviewing existing AI projects on a case-by-case basis, the proposed AI city seeks to attract global talent and prevent workforce migration by integrating advanced technology infrastructure with world-class living facilities.
