Two Greek firefighters have died while battling a wildfire near Rethymno on the island of Crete. Gale-force winds have fueled the flames, forcing the evacuation of several villages as fires continue to break out across Greece, including on the islands of Paros and Lesbos.
Across southern Europe, extreme heat and dry conditions have intensified the wildfire crisis. In Spain, authorities are working to stabilize a massive fire in Ávila province, which has burned over 43,000 hectares, while France faces renewed flare-ups in the Gironde region. Turkey has also reported significant fire activity, leading to highway closures and hospital evacuations in Muğla province.
Climate experts note that Europe is warming twice as fast as the global average, contributing to more frequent heatwaves and intense wildfires. While some evacuation orders in Spain have been lifted, officials remain on high alert as temperatures climb and fire services struggle to contain active fronts in Portugal and across the Mediterranean.
