World-renowned climber Nirmal Purja is feared missing after an avalanche struck a team of 10 mountaineers on Broad Peak in Pakistan on Thursday. The Alpine Club of Pakistan confirmed that the entire expedition, which includes nationals from Pakistan, Oman, China, and the US, has been out of communication since the incident.
Authorities are currently coordinating with government agencies to launch an immediate search and rescue operation. Efforts to mobilize helicopter support and other resources are underway, though officials noted that progress remains dependent on weather and operational conditions.
Purja, a former British special forces soldier, is a celebrated mountaineer known for his record-breaking summits of the world's 14 highest peaks. He had recently been attempting to become the first person to climb all 14 of these mountains twice.
