President Donald J. Trump has unveiled a new policy for generic drug imports, set to take effect on August 1, 2026. Under the plan, generic pharmaceuticals will remain tariff-free for two years. Following this period, import duties will rise to 100 percent for one year, before increasing to 200 percent thereafter.
The administration stated the policy aims to protect the public by incentivizing companies to establish domestic manufacturing facilities. Firms that fail to build such infrastructure within the designated timeframe will face penalties. The President noted that pharmaceutical facility construction is already expanding across the country.
Existing regulations concerning patented, branded, and innovative drugs will remain unchanged under the new directive.
